Happy New Year!
I am not much of a lover of ballads.
They seem to drone endlessly on.
And they are almost always done by people whose voice is very reminiscent of nails on a chalkboard!
(shivers down my spine, just at the memory!)
But, I really like this guy's voice.
The words are sort of convoluted, like many it seems.
So settle back and dream of 1975 .....
The horrible disco scene was just starting out.
The talentles Brothers Gibb were just beginning to make a name that brought them wealth ...
Andt only tragedy in the end.
And let us not forget KC and the Sunshine Band, defining all that was wrong with music in the 1970's!
And out of nowhere, this song appeared.
Just an anomaly really.
In no short order KC would bury this song.
But just for a moment there was something beautiful on the airwaves.....

Awesome Book
With my recovery from the heart attack and auto accident, I have been mostly on bed rest. And, I have pretty much read everything in the house and on the computer - life becomes overly boring!
Back when I was in college I got into reading Agatha Christie's books. She was an okay writer, most of her early works were better, the latter ones predictable and often contrived. I managed to assemble a complete collection of her books - in first editions. I even had her pre-release edition of the Under Dog. My favorite was They came to Baghdad - obviously written by someone whom had been there! Experience is always the best resource when writing.
So in my search through the house, I found an Aggie I did not remember, "Come, Tell Me How You Live". Written under her married name of Mallowan - I think it is her best book!
Basically the book covers her husband's exploration of tells in Syria at the start of World War II. The obstacles her famous husband are at times so laughable, I had to put the book down to recover! And it was telling to read of a rather sheltered British writer whom is suddenly faced with the reality of life in the real world often with hilarious results!
If I had a criticism, it would be that she never goes into sufficient depth to understand the resolution of issues. And I am nosy enough to want to know if she ever fully understood the plight of the non-British, non-moneyed people of the world!
Were you to just cut and paste the name Somer, everywhere that Agatha refers to herself, suddenly we have my sister's life of traveling the world and failing to interact successfully with others! Which only increases the humor potential for me!` Failing that you can just watch the movie Trenchcoat to see my sister's usual vacation ....

Daniel's Detractors - Addressing Names
From out of the 1870's came the " German Higher Criticism"; really nothing more than an attempt to discredit the Bible at a time of philosophical end fighting between scientific humanism and theologians over the mind of man. Of course what was really at stake was the validity of the concept of God and salvation (much less sin!).
The greatest attacks were against the creation story - which no one can PROVE one way or another via scientific inquiry. Though I sorely wish that there would be found ... but we are called to faith, not scientific observation, as the basis for salvation.
Falling not far behind is the attack against the book of Daniel. If you can successfully break the book of Daniel - you have broken the Bible. Or so were the boasts of the anti-Bible league. So successful were the attacks on Daniel that even to this day, Christians buy into the arguments against the validity of Daniel .... !
However within 16 years of "German Higher Criticiam" published works on Daniel were some very well researched worked disputing, if not totally discrediting, these arguments - point by point! And, the arguments are just repeated as though still true ...
The real argument mostly revolved around the lack of archaeological evidence, Babylon had still not been excavated by Europeans, hence obviously, no one in the book of Daniel could actually exist.
And when the Babylonians texts were translated, the detractors were correct; Daniel, Darius, even Nebuchadnezzar, not a o one of them existed in the records ... End of argument. The book of Daniel was obvious just a story, perhaps an Israeli pro-nationalistic play, but in no way could it have been true. Sigh. However as scholarship has shown, even to the point of actually talking to the people whom lived in the area, Babylonian was far more complex than first thought. It was far more complex than any modern language and yet, it was phonetic - if you knew how to pronounce the characters. (a strong argument for actually talking with the people of any area and not assuming you are smarter than everyone!)
So let us take Darius, King of the Medes, the one whom figured out how to break into the walled city of Babylon. He does not exist because nowhere in the Babylonian texts is anyone with a name spelled Darius to be found. Then again, on a mountain side was found, in huge letters carved into a cliff face: the deeds and victories of this non-existent ruler, Darius King of the Persians. I wonder how Cyrus felt about that claim chiseled into eternity! This was easily read by those in the valley for over 2,500 years before Europeans discovered it. And in the Babylonian texts, Darius is known as: Darayawaush, Dorejawosch, Dara, Darab, Dareious - all variation of his name. It depended upon the language his name was written in and to be read by.
Want a really hard one? Try Nebuchadnezzar! No matter how you try to decode his name, you will end up with something appearing to be An-pa-sa-du-sis! And here is where talking with the locals came in handy to the one whom broke the Babylonian Class 3 codes. This odd An-pa-sa-du-sis actually is pronounced "Nebukadurriussur". Okay, pretty darn close ...
Worse part was that all of this was known before 1857! Long before the German Higher Criticism decided to attack the book of Daniel; including the name mess ups between English and Babylonian translations ....

Do They Have A Soul?
"But, do they really have a soul?"
The question posed concerning the Neanderthal issue.
We have a series of studies running in Genesis right now, so life the universe and everything are on the table.
You have Man, just like you and me. Made in the image of God, given a soul, Jesus died for you!
But, we have an ancestor, the Neanderthal. Oh wait! Man has been around just as long as the Neanderthal. They interbred with us. We are the Neanderthal! Or what is left of them in any event.
Neanderthal's can be proven to have taken human wives, children were born from these unions (we have the family graves!), they practiced a very telling form of burial - red ochre and the body laid on flowers, they cooked, they ate baked bread, they made weapons, they made music and had flutes, they created cave art!, they sculpted small figures from stone of great delicacy, a sufficient number of pierced shells make one wonder if they wore necklaces, we have even found what appears to be a weapons factory!, one site even has an obvious hot tub built inside a cave! Outside of their brow ridge, they are as human in their behaviors as you or I. And concurrent with ancient man.
The Neanderthals were almost worldwide - except for the America's. No evidence has ever been found of anything Neanderthal in the new world.
Always pictured hairier than most humans (they have to be pictured as ape like), usually with a stupid expression on their face and a slack open mouth (they have to be stupider than us). Got to look dumber than the ultimate creation after all! But, what if Neanderthal was smarter than Mankind?
Remember that odd reference in Genesis to the Nephilim? No? Then check out Genesis 6:4 for the Bible's almost offhand remark that there was something else at one time ... other than just God's creation running around.
After I became a Christian, I was very happy to equate the Nephilim with the Neanderthal. It works well. Man preceded them and archaeology supports that. Man was not a descendent of the Neanderthal from the aspect of evolution but only from the point of procreation. And aside from the fact that you and I do carry a percentage of Neanderthal DNA, they were wiped from the Earth.
So, do they have souls?
Well, I assume that their DNA was similar enough to ours to make their babies. If they are the product of women and angelic beings, then again the DNA issue has to be assumed. So, if they fall within the classification of MAN - they would have to have a soul!
But, I want to emphasize something here - their burials. Burials mean that there is some thought of an afterlife, some meaning to life of more than just today is all there is ... The bodies were buried on beds of flowers and then covered in red ochre. Burial is not something which happens outside of man. And as for the flowers? I am sure there are lots of ideas, even I can think of a few just off the top of my head, but that does not make this practice have those meanings. To cover the smell of decay, to call for spring and the renewing of life, etc. However, the red ochre is even more interesting ...
Red Ochre - Red Earth - a symbol of what? Did you know that ADOM, associated with ADAM, means red? Was the burial of the dead with the ochre to equate them back to Adam, the first man? To claim that they were MAN and not an abomination? One has to wonder. This practice was even to spread throughout the middle eastern burials of just plain old mankind. Who started this practice? We will never know but it seems that the Neanderthal greatly predates the practice by man.
But, this is a Kris-ism, something I think from my own investigations. I can be wrong, it has happened before, so just sharing what I know and suspect at this time ...
